Originally a MGM motion picture, the musical is set just prior to the 1904 World’s Fair, as the family anticipates the wonders of the exposition and then considers a move to New York City, according to Tams-Witmark Music Library. In addition to the title song, other popular pieces include “The Boy Next Door,” “Skip to My Lou,” and “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas.” The story is based on “The Kensington Stories” by Sally Benson with book by Hugh Wheeler and songs by Hugh Martin and Ralph Blane.
Leading the cast is Katy Beckermann as Esther Smith, the role made famous by Judy Garland in the 1944 movie. Beckermann is currently on stage at the Opera House, playing the Widow Corney in Oliver! Her other GTC credits include Singin’ in the Rain, Hello, Dolly!, and Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street.
